A northwest Iowa farmer says his soybean harvest should be wrapped up this week.
Kelly Nieuwenhuis farms near Primghar in O’Brien County…
“I’ve been really happy with the (soybean) yields this year. Last year we had kind of a shorter crop and this year they are running from 75 to 85 bushels per acre. That’s a good soybean crop.”
He tells Brownfield he’s optimistic about his corn crop.
“It’s looked pretty good. We had some tip back, but nothing serious. We usually shoot for an inch of tip back. That means we got it planted thick enough.”
In Monday’s Crop Progress report, the USDA said 26% of Iowa’s corn crop has been harvested – behind the five-year average pace of 50%. Soybean harvest in the state is 57% complete, below the five-year average of 74%.
