Wapello County residents will have several opportunities in October to learn more about the proposed Wapello County Jail Expansion and Renovation Project before voters consider the measure in the November 3, 2026, General Election.
The county is proposing a bond referendum of up to $45 million to fund improvements to the existing jail facility. The proposed project would increase the jail’s total bed capacity to 316 beds and include renovations to the kitchen, laundry and other support areas. The project also includes site modifications, a new roof and a new security system.
The Wapello County Board of Supervisors is hosting a series of public forums to provide information about the proposed project and areas that could be affected.
The forums are open to the public. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments. Anyone wishing to speak for or against the project will have an opportunity to do so.

Wapello County voters will decide on the proposed jail bond referendum as part of the November 3, 2026, General Election.
