The American Home Finding Association (AHFA) is seeking volunteers age 55 and older to participate in its Foster Grandparent Program, providing older adults with an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children across Wapello County.
The program is designed for limited-income senior volunteers who enjoy working with children, including those with exceptional or special needs, in supervised classroom settings.
Foster Grandparents may assist children with reading and pre-reading skills, homework, games, and storytelling. Volunteers can serve as mentors, friends, and positive role models while building meaningful relationships with children in the community.
Volunteer Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be at least 55 years old.
- Live in Wapello County.
- Enjoy working with children in schools, preschools, child care centers, or similar settings.
- Meet the program’s income eligibility guidelines.
- Be willing to volunteer at least 20 hours per week.
Program Benefits
According to AHFA, eligible volunteers may receive approximately $240 to $480 per month in tax-free reimbursement, depending on their volunteer hours and eligibility. The reimbursement does not affect certain benefits, including Title XIX, SSI, rent status, and heat assistance.
Additional benefits include paid holidays, paid time off for medical and vacation needs, training, a meal during volunteer hours, and mileage reimbursement for those who drive their own vehicles. Public transportation may also be available for eligible volunteers.
The Foster Grandparent Program provides older adults with a way to share their time, experience, and encouragement with children while remaining active in the community.
