A historical missing-person case involving Melissa Sue Irwin is raising questions about what happened after she was reported missing in 2000.
Irwin was listed in the Iowa Missing Persons Bulletin published in May 2001. According to the bulletin, she was reported missing on October 28, 2000, with the Ottumwa Police Department identified as the reporting agency.
The bulletin lists Irwin as 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighing approximately 100 pounds. She was described as having sandy hair and blue eyes. At the time, authorities asked anyone with information about her whereabouts to contact the Ottumwa Police Department or the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s Missing Person Information Clearinghouse.
Additional Iowa missing-person bulletins from 2001 contain conflicting information about Irwin, including different dates of birth and a June 8, 2001, missing date. It is not clear from the historical records whether those changes were corrections to the original report, a new report, or an administrative update.
That discrepancy is an important part of the ongoing research into the case. Before Irwin’s story can be accurately presented as an unresolved disappearance, her case history and current status need to be confirmed through law enforcement records.
