Larry James Benge, 78, of Blakesburg passed away September 18, 2026, on his son Robert’s birthday.
He was born February 2, 1948 in Ottumwa to James and Margaret Hotz Benge. He married Alice Kathleen Mercer June 12, 1982 and she preceded him in death October 4, 2022.
Growing up, Larry helped his parents operate Benge Grocery and Locker in Blakesburg. He graduated from Blakesburg High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1970. After his time in the service, Larry moved to Des Moines where he and his brother, Jack operated a barber shop. They also worked together at The Tavern in West Des Moines and served as volunteer firemen. Moving back to Blakesburg, he worked various places including driving a semi-truck, managing a restaurant and working for the city of Blakesburg.
Larry enjoyed cooking, especially barbeque, and shared his creations with family and friends. He was always ready to entertain people with his many stories.
Surviving is his son, Chris Benge of Blakesburg; a grandchild, Talon James Benge of Blue Springs, MO; brothers, Danny “Ross” Benge and Jack (Nichole) Benge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Benge; a brother, Robert David Benge; and a sister, Nancy Haff.
His body has been cremated. Military services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, September 24th at Reece Funeral Home. Following the military honors, his family will be present to greet friends until 6 p.m. Thursday.
A time to further celebrate his life and inurnment will be in Blakesburg Cemetery at a later date.
