The Jefferson County Treasurer’s Office has announced that driver’s license and ID services are now available on both a walk-in and appointment basis, according to a social media post from the office.
The Jefferson County Treasurer’s Office now operates a fully hybrid system for driver and ID services. Appointments are encouraged and will take priority over walk-ins, but both are welcome. Driving skills tests remain appointment only.
The treasurer’s office explained the background behind the change in a social media post. Following COVID, offices across the state moved to an appointment-only system. In Jefferson County, that system worked well in part because the number of foreign national students coming into the county tripled during that period, and the office did not have the staff or equipment to serve both that population and county citizens on a walk-in basis. The office also found it was actually more efficient under the appointment system, issuing 10 percent more credentials than under the previous first-come, first-served approach.
State legislators subsequently passed a bill increasing fees for vehicle titling and adding a $10 fee for out-of-county residents seeking credentials in Jefferson County. That additional revenue allowed the office to hire another employee at no additional cost to taxpayers and transition to the current hybrid system. The treasurer noted that based on resident feedback, roughly half preferred the appointment system while the other half preferred walk-ins, making the hybrid approach a middle ground intended to serve both groups.
Those seeking driver’s license or ID services can visit the Jefferson County Treasurer’s Office with or without an appointment, though appointments are encouraged.
