Jefferson County Conservation will host a classroom-style hunter education course at the Jefferson County Park Nature Center on Saturday, October 10th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., according to a social media post from Jefferson County Conservation.
Hunter education is a mandatory program designed to introduce students to a variety of life-long skills important to outdoor recreational opportunities. The course covers basic survival and first aid skills, water safety, wildlife identification, the basics of wildlife management, hunting laws, and firearm and archery safety. The program also stresses the importance of individual responsibility and outdoor ethics.
Iowa law requires that anyone born after January 1st, 1972 must be certified in hunter education before they are eligible to purchase an Iowa hunting license.
Students should bring a sack lunch and something to drink, and dress appropriately for the weather as a portion of the class will be held outside.
Those registering a child for the course should log in as the child being registered or create an account for that child rather than registering as a parent. Students who have previously purchased Iowa DNR licenses — such as youth deer tags — will already have an Iowa DNR account and should register using their personal information.
