Heavy Rain Could Bring Flooding Across Iowa

The National Weather Service in Des Moines is warning residents across central Iowa to be prepared for several rounds of heavy rain that could lead to flooding through Thursday night.

Forecasters say persistent rainfall could cause river flooding, as well as flash flooding and flooding in low-lying areas.

The threat is expected to continue from now through Thursday night, with the heaviest rainfall expected Wednesday night.

Residents in areas that are prone to flooding should stay alert and be prepared for changing conditions, especially if additional heavy rain falls over already saturated ground.

Drivers should never attempt to travel through a flooded roadway. Even shallow, moving water can be dangerous and may hide washed-out sections of road.

The National Weather Service encourages residents, emergency responders and local partners to keep up with the latest forecasts and flood information as conditions develop.

The latest weather briefing from the National Weather Service in Des Moines is available at the NWS Des Moines Weather Briefing.

Additional information on severe weather and hydrologic conditions can be found through the NWS Des Moines DSS/Hydro page.
