A new fall tradition is coming to the courthouse lawn in Monroe County this Halloween season.

After discussions about the future of trick-or-treating on the square, including rising costs and safety concerns, organizers have decided to transition the event to a Harvest Treat Walk.

The event will take place Friday, October 30, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., using the sidewalks around the courthouse lawn.

Community businesses, organizations and residents are invited to participate by dressing up and handing out candy, as in previous years. Participants are also encouraged to offer a small fall-themed activity for children.

Some suggested activities include partnering with a local greenhouse to provide mini pumpkins for children to decorate, working with a local grocery store to offer bobbing for apples, leaf-rubbing art or a small obstacle course.

Suggested locations will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants are asked to bring all supplies needed for their candy distribution or activity.

Those planning to participate are asked to let organizers know what they will be offering so the activity can be included in event promotions.

Organizers hope the new format will provide families with a safe and enjoyable fall experience before the evening’s Haunted History Hike.

The Monroe County Historical Museum will open at 5 p.m., with the guided Haunted History Hike scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
