A 9-year-old Iowa City boy who captured the hearts of many through his connection with the University of Iowa has died following an ATV accident.
Nile Kron, a former University of Iowa Kid Captain, died Tuesday from injuries sustained in the accident, according to his obituary.
Nile’s story began at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, where he was born prematurely with several serious medical conditions, including a cleft lip, scoliosis and hearing loss. He spent more than 50 days in the neonatal intensive care unit.
When Nile was just one week old, his heart stopped three times while he was undergoing an MRI. Doctors and nurses at the hospital were able to revive him and save his life.
His medical journey continued throughout his childhood, including numerous surgeries involving his spine, lip and palate, and ears. Despite the challenges he faced, Nile became known for his energy, personality and love for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Nile was selected as a University of Iowa Kid Captain, an honor recognizing young patients whose stories highlight the care provided at University of Iowa Health Care.
The Iowa Baseball Camp for the Deaf also remembered Nile following his death, saying he brought tremendous energy to the camp and would be deeply missed.
His school, Hoover Elementary in Iowa City, is honoring Nile on Friday by asking fourth-grade students to wear black and gold in recognition of his love for the Hawkeyes.
Nile’s family and community are remembering a young boy whose life was marked by remarkable resilience and a lasting connection to the people who cared for him.
He was 9 years old.
