A Fairfield woman is facing a felony drug charge after a traffic stop in Des Moines County led to the discovery of heroin in her vehicle.
Michelle Hughes, 44, has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance — Third or Subsequent Offense, a Class D Felony, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor, Driving While License Denied, Suspended, Cancelled, or Revoked, and a Turning at Intersection Violation.
According to the press release, Des Moines County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle for a turning violation at the intersection of Division Street and Central Avenue in Burlington at approximately 1:54 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1st. Deputies identified the driver as Hughes and determined her license was suspended.
While speaking with Hughes, deputies detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed a piece of foil containing heroin, several pieces of foil with heroin residue, and a drug pipe with heroin residue. Hughes was placed under arrest and transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.
Hughes is being held on a $5,000 cash or surety bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 11th.
