Iowa is putting a spotlight on workplace safety this week as Gov. Kim Reynolds has proclaimed August 10-14, 2026, as Safe + Sound Week in the state.
The statewide observance is being recognized by the Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or IOSHA, a division of the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing.
The goal is straightforward: encourage employers and employees to make safety part of the everyday workplace, not something that is only discussed after an accident happens.
Safe + Sound Week focuses on three important areas — strong leadership from management, employees taking an active role in safety, and having a process in place to spot and correct hazards before someone gets hurt. The national OSHA campaign runs August 10-16, 2026.
Iowa safety professionals provide training and education to help workers recognize potential dangers and work with employers to address problems. Safety committees can also play an important role by identifying concerns and helping find solutions.
DIAL Interim Director Aaron Baack says every employee has a part to play by watching out for coworkers and helping maintain safe working conditions.
DIAL is encouraging businesses and workers across Iowa to use Safe + Sound Week as an opportunity to review their safety practices and look for ways to make their workplaces healthier and safer.
