One of Keokuk County’s longest-running summer traditions returns this weekend as the Keokuk County Fair takes place in What Cheer.
The fair, which traces its roots back to 1889 when it was known as the What Cheer District Fair, will once again feature four days of exhibits, entertainment, competitions, carnival rides, and family-friendly activities.
The festivities begin Thursday evening with the crowning of the 2026 Keokuk County Fair Queen at 7:30 p.m. inside Heritage Hall.
Friday’s schedule starts at 8:30 a.m. with exhibit entries and scavenger hunt list pick-up at the Todd Pavilion. Judging for Floral Hall exhibits begins at noon, followed by a full afternoon of activities including children’s games at Thomas Hall, a baby pageant, a cornhole tournament, and carnival rides from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Grandstand events include harness horse racing at 12:30 p.m. and the horse and mule show at 5:30 p.m.
Saturday offers another full day of fair activities. Floral Hall exhibits will be open for viewing from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., while carnival rides will run from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Harness horse racing returns to the grandstand at 12:30 p.m., where the annual “Friend of the Fair” award will also be presented. The evening wraps up with figure-eight racing beginning at 7 p.m., with hot laps scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The fair concludes Sunday with a community church service at 10:30 a.m. in Thomas Hall, followed by the final day of carnival rides from noon until 4 p.m.
With more than 135 years of history, the Keokuk County Fair continues to celebrate agriculture, community, and family fun while welcoming visitors from across southeast Iowa.
