Keep Food Safety Top of Mind for Summer Lunches

Packing a lunch for day camp, summer programs, or a family outing is part of the season for many families. Keeping those meals safe to eat is just as important as making them nutritious.

One helpful tip is to use a freezable lunch bag. Freezing the bag overnight helps keep food cold throughout the day. It’s also a good idea to clean the lunch bag daily and wipe it down regularly to help reduce germs.

When possible, include foods that don’t require refrigeration. Shelf-stable options such as fruit cups, trail mix, and peanut butter and banana sandwiches can be great choices for warm summer days. These foods are convenient while still providing a satisfying lunch.

Good hand hygiene is another key part of food safety. Washing hands with soap and water before eating is the best option, but carrying a small bottle of hand sanitizer can be helpful when handwashing facilities aren’t immediately available.

Staying hydrated is also important during outdoor activities. A reusable insulated water bottle filled with ice water can help keep drinks cold for hours. Be sure to clean reusable bottles thoroughly, including the inside and any straws, using bottle and straw brushes to reach hard-to-clean areas.

Whether you’re packing lunch for day camp, a picnic, or another summer adventure, following a few simple food safety practices can help keep everyone healthy while enjoying the season.
