Every year on July 28, Americans observe Buffalo Soldiers Day, recognizing the courage, sacrifice, and lasting contributions of the first African American regiments in the regular U.S. Army.
The observance marks the creation of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments on July 28, 1866, when Congress established the nation’s first peacetime all-Black Army units following the Civil War. These soldiers became known as the “Buffalo Soldiers,” a name widely believed to have been given to them by Native American tribes in recognition of their bravery and resilience.
Buffalo Soldiers played a vital role in the American West, protecting settlers, guarding mail routes, building roads, and serving on the frontier during a challenging period of U.S. history. Despite facing discrimination and harsh conditions, they earned a reputation for discipline, dedication, and exceptional military service. Their low desertion rates and commitment to duty set them apart during an era when military service was especially difficult.
The regiments also served with distinction during the Spanish-American War and other military campaigns in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although the original Buffalo Soldier regiments did not see combat during World War II, their service helped pave the way for the eventual integration of the U.S. Armed Forces.
In 1992, Congress officially designated July 28 as Buffalo Soldiers Day to recognize their historic contributions. That same year, General Colin Powell dedicated the Buffalo Soldier Monument at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, honoring the legacy of these trailblazing soldiers.
Today, Buffalo Soldiers Day serves as a reminder of the bravery, perseverance, and patriotism demonstrated by generations of African American service members whose sacrifices helped shape the history of the United States.
