Police: Ottumwa Man Fired Gun into Occupied Home

Police say an Ottumwa man narrowly missed hitting a person when he fired a gun into an occupied residence last month.

Tyler Kershaw, 36, was charged with reckless use of a firearm – property damage, an aggravated misdemeanor.

On May 15th at approximately 7:23 PM, court records say Kershaw discharged a firearm into a residence on West Finley Avenue in Ottumwa. According to police, the bullet entered the home, missed an occupant’s head by about a foot, and ricocheted within the structure.

The victim’s home had a hole through the siding and drywall as a result of the shooting, according to court documents. The estimated damage is $200.

Kershaw was arrested on May 27th and was later released after posting a $2,000 bond. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 16th.
