An Ottumwa teenager is facing an operating while intoxicated charge after police say he crashed into a parked vehicle early Sunday morning.
According to a criminal complaint, officers with the Ottumwa Police Department responded to the 1100 block of North Court Street at approximately 2:24 a.m. on June 29 for a reported vehicle accident.
Court documents allege that Soiji Albert, 19, of Ottumwa, was driving on a public roadway when he struck a legally parked vehicle.
When officers made contact with Albert, they reported observing bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, difficulty maintaining his balance, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.
According to court records, Albert admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages before driving. He agreed to participate in standardized field sobriety tests, during which officers noted multiple validated clues of impairment.
Albert also consented to a preliminary breath test, which indicated a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit. He later provided a breath sample on the Datamaster, which reportedly measured 0.106% BrAC.
Albert was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail before later being released on bond.
He is charged with Operating While Under the Influence – First Offense, a serious misdemeanor. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for June 30.
