Newton is expanding its network of automated license plate reader cameras following action by the city council to approve a new two-year contract with Flock Safety.
The agreement adds five cameras to the city’s existing system, increasing the total number from 10 to 15. Installation is expected to be completed within the next three months.
City officials estimate each camera costs approximately $3,000 annually. With installation expenses included, the first year of the contract is projected to cost about $50,000, while the second year is expected to total $45,000.
The camera system was first introduced in Newton in 2024. Since then, local law enforcement reports the technology has assisted in a variety of criminal investigations and public safety efforts.
According to the Newton Police Department, information gathered from the cameras has helped investigators recover stolen vehicles, locate missing individuals, identify suspects in major cases, and make arrests involving outstanding warrants. The system has also been used in investigations related to vehicle thefts, burglary incidents, fraud schemes, narcotics activity, and other criminal offenses.
City leaders say the expansion is intended to strengthen investigative tools available to law enforcement and enhance community safety.
