Moravia Teen Charged After Rathbun Lake Incident

An Moravia man is facing a felony charge after authorities say he intentionally struck a man with a vehicle near Rathbun Lake, causing life-threatening injuries.

According to the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the 20000 block of Islet Loop at Rathbun Lake at approximately 6 p.m. on May 29.

A criminal complaint alleges that Thomas Armstrong, 18, of Moravia, committed the offense of willful injury causing serious injury with intent.

Court documents state that Armstrong admitted he told the victim he was going to hit him. Armstrong also allegedly told deputies that he struck the victim with the passenger-side front of his vehicle.

According to court records, Armstrong admitted he knew the victim was partially blind and intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Deputies reported that the victim suffered serious head injuries resulting in life-threatening conditions. The victim was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital in critical condition. No update on the victim’s condition has been released.

Armstrong waived his preliminary hearing and is currently being held in the Appanoose County Jail.

He is charged with willful injury causing serious injury, a Class C felony.
