The Iowa Valley Community School District is mourning the loss of sophomore Grady Williams, with Superintendent Curt Rheingans sharing the news with families and the broader community on Sunday.
“It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of Iowa Valley sophomore Grady Williams,” Rheingans wrote. “Our administration, staff, students, and community are deeply saddened by this loss. There are simply no words that can adequately express the grief, heartbreak, and sense of loss we feel during a time like this.”
Rheingans asked the community to keep the Williams family in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate the loss. “Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies are with Grady’s family, friends, classmates, and all those whose lives were touched by him,” he said.
Support services will be available for students beginning Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with Grant Wood AEA Crisis team members, district counselors, and additional support staff on hand throughout the week and beyond as needed. Rheingans noted that students may respond to grief in a variety of ways — some may become quiet or withdrawn, while others may express sadness, anger, confusion, or even laughter as they share memories of their friend and classmate. He said all of these reactions can be a normal part of the grieving process.
“For many students, spending time with friends and trusted adults can be an important source of comfort,” Rheingans said. “We encourage parents and guardians to talk openly with their children, listen to their thoughts and feelings, and provide reassurance and support during this difficult time.”
Students and community members affected by the loss are encouraged to reach out to a counselor, administrator, teacher, coach, pastor, youth leader, family member, or another trusted adult for support. “No one should feel they have to carry their grief alone,” Rheingans said. “We want all of our students to know that they are valued, they are cared for, and they are never alone. If you are struggling, please reach out to someone you trust.”
How to Help
Members of the Iowa Valley community wishing to support the Williams family can contribute to Grady’s Memorial Fund, established at Keystone Savings Bank in Marengo to assist with expenses related to his passing. Arrangements have also been made with Powell Funeral Homes to ensure the family is informed that funeral expenses will be covered.

The Iowa Valley baseball and softball games originally scheduled against Sigourney have been rescheduled to Friday, June 26th in Marengo.
