The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Iowa Trappers Association are teaming up once again to offer a series of beginner trapping workshops across Iowa beginning in July.
The hands-on workshops are designed to introduce participants to the basics of trapping while helping preserve traditional outdoor skills that have been passed down for generations.
“We’ve seen an increased interest from people wanting to learn or relearn these traditional frontier skills, like trapping,” said Jamie Cook, program coordinator with the Iowa DNR. “We’ve held eight to 10 workshops around the state over the past few years, and interest continues to grow. The same is true across the country.”
Workshops are currently scheduled in Elkader, Knoxville, Mason City, St. Charles, Ainsworth, and Wellsburg. Participants will receive instruction from experienced trappers and learn about proper equipment, trap placement, Iowa trapping regulations, and how to prepare hides for trade.
The workshops are open to participants of all ages, making them a great opportunity for families and outdoor enthusiasts interested in learning more about Iowa’s trapping heritage.
Officials encourage early registration, as space is limited. More information and registration details are available through the Iowa DNR’s event registration system.
The workshops are part of a partnership between the Iowa DNR and the Iowa Trappers Association and support a nationwide effort to recruit, retain, and reactivate hunters, anglers, and trappers as participation in outdoor recreation continues to decline.
