The Burlington Civic Music Association is celebrating the remarkable contributions of Barb “Babs” McRoberts as she concludes two decades of service to the organization. McRoberts served 20 years on the board of directors, including 15 years as program director and 12 years as board president.
McRoberts joined the board in 2006 after returning to Burlington, a city she had been away from for nearly 50 years. Encouraged by friends and family to return home, she quickly became involved in the community’s arts scene.
With a background in arts administration, McRoberts brought a wealth of experience to the organization. Before moving back to Burlington, she worked as executive director of the Des Moines Ballet and managed dance presentations at the Des Moines Civic Center, where she worked with world-renowned performers such as Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rudolf Nureyev.
During her leadership, Burlington Civic Music expanded its reach and modernized its operations. The organization adopted the “Live Music on the River” identity, launched its first website, increased its social media presence, and introduced single-ticket sales alongside traditional season memberships.
As board president from 2009 to 2021 and program director from 2011 through June 2026, McRoberts helped strengthen educational outreach efforts and broaden the association’s connections within the performing arts industry. She also completed booking the organization’s 2026-2027 performance season before stepping down from her programming responsibilities.
Current Board President Kay Conrad credited McRoberts with helping shape the organization into what it is today.
“Barb’s vision, dedication and expertise have helped shape Burlington Civic Music into the vibrant organization it is today,” Conrad said. “Her commitment to bringing outstanding live performances to our community has enriched Burlington’s cultural life for two decades.”
Throughout her years of service, McRoberts remained committed to bringing high-quality live performances to southeast Iowa and ensuring local audiences could experience exceptional artists close to home.
As McRoberts steps away from her role as program director, Conrad will assume those responsibilities while continuing to serve as board president.
The Burlington Civic Music Association expressed its sincere gratitude to McRoberts for her years of leadership, service, and dedication to the performing arts.
