A farmer in north-central Iowa lost about 100,000 bushels of grain storage capacity following a weekend storm.
Josh Hitzhusen of Rockwell says straight-line winds sent a 48-foot bin hurtling across his farmyard Friday night.
“Kind of laid it over a 36-foot bin and a 30-foot bin, and part of the debris hit another bin, downed pipes, wrecked a couple catwalks on the dryer. Really made a mess, but it’s a miracle that it was just those bins.”
He tells Brownfield it will be difficult to recover in time for harvest.
“Now it’s meet with the insurance adjustor, start figuring out plans for how to replace it. Because fall is going to come around pretty quick, and we lost a little over 100,000 bushels of storage or something. So we need to get realistic on whether these things can be replaced, or whether we need to make plans to have more crops sold out of the field.”
Hitzhusen says a local grain bin dealer says the soonest a new bin could be delivered is the beginning of September.
