Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day is set to take place this week, with participation growing steadily across the state as 90 Iowa schools have already signed up to take part.
The annual event encourages students, families, and school staff to choose active ways to get to school—walking, biking, or using other non-motorized transportation. Organizers say the goal is to promote healthier lifestyles, reduce traffic around schools, and strengthen connections within local communities.
“This is one of the best opportunities we have all year to get students and families excited about active transportation,” said Matthew Burkey, Director of Iowa Safe Routes to School for the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. “We’re seeing incredible energy across Iowa, and it’s encouraging to see so many schools stepping up to make it safer and more fun for kids to get to school while building healthy habits that can last a lifetime.”
Schools participating this year are planning a variety of activities to support the event. These include walking school buses, bike groups traveling together, and designated drop-off points where families can park and walk the rest of the way. Many schools are also organizing volunteer greeters to welcome students as they arrive, helping create a positive and energetic start to the school day.
Even with strong statewide involvement, organizers note there is still time for additional schools to join. The event is flexible and can be held on different days depending on each school’s schedule, making it accessible for communities of all sizes.
