The National Weather Service office in Des Moines is warning Iowans to prepare for the possibility of severe weather from Friday through Monday, with multiple rounds of thunderstorms expected across the state.

Forecasters say the first round of storms is expected to develop Friday evening, beginning in northwestern Iowa around 5 p.m. before moving southeast overnight into early Saturday morning. The highest threat Friday is expected north of Highway 92, though severe weather could impact much of the state.

Additional storms are forecast to move into western and central Iowa Saturday afternoon and continue through Sunday morning.

Potential hazards include large hail, damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and the possibility of tornadoes. Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware throughout the weekend and have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially during overnight hours.

The National Weather Service has released a detailed weather briefing outlining the expected threats and timing.
