A late-night call reporting a shooting brought officers with the Oskaloosa Police Department to a home in the 700 block of D Avenue West on April 4, 2023. When they arrived, they found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency responders immediately began providing aid at the scene before the victim was transported to a hospital in the Des Moines area for further treatment. Authorities have not broadly released the victim’s identity in public reports.

Investigators quickly began working to determine what led up to the shooting. Information gathered during the early stages of the case indicated the incident stemmed from an argument between the victim and the suspect. During that confrontation, the victim was shot in the leg. While serious, officials indicated early on that the situation appeared to be isolated and not a random act of violence, and there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Within hours, law enforcement identified a suspect as 22-year-old Gavin Jones. Authorities warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous as they worked to locate him. According to investigators, Jones had fled the area following the shooting, reportedly driving a stolen silver 2019 Toyota Corolla with Iowa license plates. The case quickly expanded beyond the local level, with assistance from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, highlighting the seriousness of the incident and the urgency of finding the suspect.

The search for Jones crossed state lines. By April 5 and into April 6, authorities confirmed he had been located and taken into custody in Missouri. His arrest was carried out without major incident, and he was expected to be returned to Iowa to face a felony charge of willful injury causing serious injury.

Following his arrest, Jones was extradited back to Iowa, where the case entered the court system. The charge he faced is classified as a Class C felony under Iowa law, which carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison if convicted, along with possible fines or supervised release. However, despite the seriousness of the charge, there has been little publicly available information about how the case ultimately concluded.

As of the latest available records and reporting, there has been no widely published update confirming whether the case resulted in a conviction, plea agreement, or sentencing. Situations like this are not uncommon, as many felony cases are resolved through plea deals or court proceedings that do not receive extensive media coverage. In Iowa, detailed court outcomes can also be difficult to access without direct searches through state court databases.
