Authorities responded to a domestic disturbance that escalated into a violent incident involving a minor child.

On April 11 at approximately 7:52 p.m., the Oskaloosa Police Department responded to a report of child endangerment in the 500 block of Springcreek Village Court.

According to the criminal complaint, Jeffrey Stewart, 42, of Oskaloosa, allegedly placed a minor child in substantial risk of harm. Court documents state that Stewart assaulted the child’s mother while she was holding the child.

Police report that Stewart forced his way into a room where the mother was holding the child. During the incident, he allegedly bit the woman, causing a deep cut behind her ear that resulted in bleeding.

Stewart was arrested and transported to the Mahaska County Jail. He was later released after posting bond.

A no-contact order was issued on April 12. A preliminary hearing was waived, and an initial court appearance is scheduled for April 22.

Stewart is charged with child endangerment, aggravated assault, and domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness, a first-offense serious misdemeanor.
