Authorities are investigating a case of severe animal neglect after a dog was found in critical condition and later died despite emergency care. The investigation, which involved a veterinary examination and detailed medical findings, has resulted in criminal charges being filed.
On April 1 at approximately 7:06 a.m., the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of animal neglect involving Alexander Garcia, 22, of the 2000 block of 60th Avenue in Dallas, Iowa.
According to a criminal complaint, authorities observed an adult male Rottweiler in extremely poor condition. The dog appeared severely malnourished and had difficulty standing. Its ribs and hips were clearly visible, and it struggled to use its back legs.
A search warrant was obtained, and a veterinarian examined the dog at the residence. Due to its critical condition, the veterinarian took custody of the animal and transported it to the Animal Health Center in Knoxville for treatment.
Court documents state that X-rays and blood work were performed. The veterinarian’s initial assessment rated the dog a 1 out of 9 on the body condition scale, indicating severe emaciation. The dog’s eyes appeared sunken, and its body temperature was recorded as hypothermic. X-rays also revealed dense materials in the stomach, including objects consistent with gravel, rocks, metal, and/or bones.
Authorities reported that the dog died overnight. A necropsy conducted the following morning found no evidence of cancer or any underlying disease that would have caused its death. The veterinarian concluded the dog suffered from severe malnutrition, dehydration, and hypothermia, and ultimately died as a result of malnutrition and dehydration.
Garcia acknowledged being a co-owner of the dog along with his 18 year old girlfriend.
He has been charged with animal neglect resulting in death, a serious misdemeanor. Garcia is currently being held in the Marion County Jail on a $2,000 cash or surety bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 17.
