Naig says the global supply chains that feed U.S. agriculture are tight, and disruptions like the Middle East conflict can be felt for months.

Iowa’s Ag Secretary has been traveling the state visiting with farmers and says one word captures how many are feeling.

“Well concern, absolutely.”

Mike Naig tells Brownfield fuel and fertilizer price shocks have caught many off guard.

“Now look, let’s be honest a lot of those prices farmers had locked in last year. But you watch the situation, you watch supply chain disruptions (and) see dramatic price increases and uncertainty creeps back in.”

He calls current headwinds facing farmers “death by a thousand cuts.”

“Everywhere you look there’s pressure, everywhere you look it seems like bad news when it comes to the input cost side of the ledger on a farm.”
