The Pekin track and field teams traveled to Pella on Thursday, March 19th, to compete in the indoor meet at Central College’s H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse. No team scores were kept. Pekin competed in the Class B divisions for both boys and girls, while Class A events featured larger schools from across the region.
Girls Class B
Pekin’s girls competed against Baxter, East Marshall, Highland, Moravia, and Twin Cedars and turned in several impressive performances, including marks that also compared favorably with the Class A field.
Pekin opened the meet with a dominant performance in the shuttle hurdle relay, winning Class B in 40.10. That time was the fastest posted in the event across both classes. The relay team consisted of Reece Brisby, Carlie Gambell, Abby Guise, and Paislee Coleman. Baxter finished second in 41.13, followed by East Marshall in 43.44 and Moravia in 45.53.
In the 4×800, Pekin claimed another Class B win in 11:14.22. Compared to the Class A field, that time ranked third overall behind only Fort Madison at 10:55.50 and Davis County at 11:13.06. Chloe Glosser, Ashlynn Adrian, Callie Deutschle, and Maddy Petrehn ran on that relay. Moravia was the only other Class B finisher at 12:27.32.
Pekin placed third in the 4×200 with a time of 2:06, trailing Highland at 1:55.03 and East Marshall at 2:02.91. Baxter followed in 2:08.88, Moravia was next in 2:09.37, and Twin Cedars finished in 2:16.12. The Panthers’ relay included Addison Smith, Brin Lauderman, Autumn Coleman, and Breanna Drish.
In the shuttle relay, Pekin finished second in 31.44, just behind Highland’s winning time of 31.08. Baxter took third in 32.68, East Marshall was fourth in 32.86, Moravia finished in 33.48, and Twin Cedars crossed in 35.15. Pekin’s runners in that event were Addison Smith, Carlie Gambell, Brin Lauderman, and Paislee Coleman.
The Panthers earned another victory in the distance medley, posting a time of 14:14.06. That mark ranked third overall across both classes, behind Fort Madison’s 13:33.76 and Bondurant-Farrar’s 14:06.56 in Class A. Maddy Petrehn, Abby Guise, Ashlynn Adrian, and Chloe Glosser made up Pekin’s winning relay. Baxter was second in Class B at 16:05.06, followed by Moravia at 17:07.49.
In the California Mile, Pekin finished fifth in Class B with a 4:14.60. Baxter won in 4:02.35, followed by Highland in 4:09.89, East Marshall in 4:11.27, and Moravia in 4:14. The eight-runner relay for Pekin included Brin Lauderman, Autumn Coleman, Mya Glick, Breanna Drish, Ashlynn Adrian, Callie Deutschle, Addison Smith, and Fynlie Brooks.
Pekin added a fourth-place finish in the 4×400 with a time of 4:51. Highland won the race in 4:44.89, East Marshall followed in 4:46.15, and Baxter finished in 4:47.90. Moravia came in at 5:10.52 and Twin Cedars at 5:35.63. Running for Pekin were Maddy Petrehn, Mya Glick, Abby Guise, and Carlie Gambell.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Paislee Coleman turned in a strong second-place finish in 9.69, behind only Baxter’s Camryn Russell at 9.26. Reece Brisby also placed for Pekin, taking sixth in 10.66.
Pekin had two place winners in the high jump. Brin Lauderman cleared 4-08 for fourth place, while Reece Brisby cleared 4-06 for fifth. Highland’s Kinzie Ruess won the event at 5-00, followed by East Marshall’s Marisa Cahalan and Baxter’s Avery Wonders, who both cleared 4-10.
Anna Hadley delivered Pekin’s most dominant individual girls performance in the shot put, winning the Class B title with a throw of 43-08.50. That mark was the best in the entire meet, regardless of class. Taylor Moore also placed third for the Panthers with a throw of 32-08.75.
Boys Class B
Pekin’s boys also had an outstanding meet against East Marshall, Highland, Moravia, Seymour, and Twin Cedars, producing several top finishes and a pair of performances that were the best posted across both classes.
In the shuttle hurdle relay, Pekin finished second in Class B with a time of 43.69, trailing East Marshall’s 40.03 and finishing ahead of Moravia’s 48.08. The relay team featured Aliyas Brock, Keegan Dickey, Jaxon Mefford, and Ryann Hammes.
Pekin won the 4×800 in 8:53.35, the fastest time posted in the event across both classes. Bondurant-Farrar won Class A in 8:53.78, just behind Pekin’s mark. The Panthers’ relay consisted of Cole Millikin, Brody Sobaski, Mason Dahlstrom, and Lane Fariss. Moravia placed second in Class B at 9:24, East Marshall was third in 9:34.28, and Seymour finished fourth in 11:43.38.
The Panthers narrowly missed another win in the 4×200, taking second in 1:37.94 behind East Marshall’s 1:37.76. Highland followed in 1:46.80, Twin Cedars ran 1:50.58, Moravia finished in 1:51.82, and Seymour posted a 2:04.37. Pekin’s runners were Nolan Glick, Riley Smith, Henry Adam, and Alijah Brock.
Pekin came back to win the shuttle relay in 27.60, a mark that ranked second overall in the meet behind only Centerville’s 27.57 in Class A. East Marshall finished second in Class B at 28.01, with Highland at 29.17, Moravia at 29.21, and Twin Cedars at 29.28. The winning Pekin relay included Aliyas Brock, Nolan Glick, Henry Adam, and Alijah Brock.
In the distance medley, Pekin claimed another first-place finish with a 12:07.19. That time ranked second overall across both classes, trailing only Bondurant-Farrar’s 11:39.81 in Class A. Lane Fariss, Riley Smith, Mason Dahlstrom, and Cole Millikin ran for the Panthers. Moravia placed second in Class B at 12:50.40, East Marshall finished in 13:23.51, and Twin Cedars came in at 15:27.22.
Pekin took third in the California Mile with a time of 3:32.94, behind Moravia’s 3:31.43 and East Marshall’s 3:31.77. Twin Cedars finished fourth at 3:52.50. Competing for Pekin were Cael Silvers, Lane Fariss, Clayton Harvey, Henry Eubanks, Keegan Dickey, Henry Adam, Jaxon Mefford, and Cole Millikin.
The Panthers closed the relays with another standout performance, winning the 4×400 in 3:40.82. That was the fastest time recorded in the event across both classes. East Marshall followed at 3:42.38, Moravia finished in 3:52.14, Highland ran 4:10.25, and Seymour posted a 4:45.08. Pekin’s relay was made up of Nolan Glick, Alijah Brock, Mason Dahlstrom, and Riley Smith.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Aliyas Brock won the Class B race in 10.47. That time ranked fifth overall when both classes were combined. Jaxon Mefford also placed for Pekin, finishing third in Class B at 11.63. Twin Cedars’ Jax Mockenhaupt was second in 11.25, followed by Moravia’s Levi Jones in 15.14.
Brody Sobaski tied for the top mark in the Class B high jump, clearing 5-10 along with Moravia’s Elias Bronson. East Marshall’s Nathan Frye placed third at 5-08, and teammate Cael Curphy was fourth at 5-06.
Henry Adam turned in a runner-up finish in the long jump with a leap of 18-10.50, just behind East Marshall’s Kaden Good at 19-07.50. East Marshall’s Eli Burns was right behind Adam at 18-10, followed by Moravia’s Asher Hudson at 16-05, Twin Cedars’ Holden Roberts at 15-03.50, and Twin Cedars’ Brock Micetich at 15-01.
In the shot put, Cal Miller placed third with a throw of 38-02, while Brantyn Sieren added a fifth-place finish at 36-04. Moravia’s Declan DeJong won the event at 42-11.75, Twin Cedars’ Matthew Fay was second at 40-03, and Highland’s William Boileau-Futrell took fourth at 37-09.
Coach’s Comments
Pekin head coach Davis Eidahl said the meet served its purpose well as an early-season evaluation opportunity.
“What I like about this meeting is having a fun meet with different events and using it as a good coaching tool where you can run kids in different events to see what they are best equipped for,” Eidahl said. “Also a good meet where you can let everyone run three events.”
