Update on Ottumwa Burglary Case

Authorities with the Ottumwa Police Department have provided an update in an ongoing burglary investigation that dates back to last year.

According to a criminal complaint, officers were initially dispatched on September 9, 2025, after a burglary was reported at a residence in the 400 block of South Ransom Street. The property owner told police they were not currently living at the home at the time of the incident. Several tools were reported missing from inside the residence.

During the investigation, officers collected two cigarette butts from the scene as evidence. The items were later submitted to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) laboratory for DNA analysis. Results from the lab identified a match to Daniel Hamilton, 47, of Ottumwa.

Investigators noted that the cigarette butts were found in close proximity to the area where entry was believed to have been made and where the tools were taken. Authorities allege that Hamilton knowingly entered the residence without permission and removed the items.

An arrest warrant for Hamilton was served on March 17. He is currently being held in the Wapello County Jail on a $5,000 cash or surety bond.

Hamilton is charged with attempted third-degree burglary, an aggravated misdemeanor. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for March 27.
