Maharishi International University’s esports League of Legends team is heading to the National Esports Collegiate Conference playoffs for the second time — and it is only the program’s second season.
For those unfamiliar with the sport, esports are competitive video games played at both collegiate and professional levels. League of Legends is a 5v5 team-based strategy game where teams work together to build strength, coordinate plays, and ultimately take down their opponent’s base. Each match involves a draft phase featuring over 150 unique champions, making every game different and requiring high levels of strategy, communication, and quick decision-making.
This season, the MIU Pioneers competed in Division 5 of the NECC and put together a dominant run, finishing with a 6-1 record as the second seed in their conference. Along the way, the Pioneers secured victories against strong programs including Ithaca College, North Dakota State University, New Mexico State University, and Tarleton University.
Head coach Eric Enlow reflected on the season and what lies ahead.
“MIU Pioneers finished 6–1 as the second seed in their conference,” Enlow said. “Expectations are high as we begin our playoff run, with our sights set on earning an invitation to the national tournament. Our last match brought some frustration, but also renewed determination as we look to make MIU history.”
The roster heading into the playoffs consists of Skylar Allen, Aaron Ellis, Cole Kerrigan, Aaron Painter, and Keta.
