The Keokuk Sheriff Department responded to a report of a violation of a no-contact order. During the investigation, authorities found that an individual had allegedly directed offensive language toward a city employee despite an active protective order.

On March 9th, at approximately 1:15 p.m., the Keokuk County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a possible violation of a no-contact order. Upon investigation, deputies went to the 300 block of E. Nugent Street and questioned Michael Maschmann, 50, of What Cheer.

Court documents indicate that Maschmann was sitting in his vehicle near the city’s What Cheer shop at the time of the incident. According to the criminal complaint, one of the city’s employees was standing by the shop when Maschmann allegedly yelled “Child Molester” at him. The employee then went around the shop in a backhoe, and Maschmann drove away in his vehicle while the employee called Maschmann a “Child Molester.”

Law enforcement reported that the employee stated there is an active no-contact order between himself and Maschmann. After confirming with Keokuk County dispatch, deputies verified that the no-contact order was indeed active. When questioned, Maschmann admitted to calling the first employee a “Child Molester” but denied addressing anyone else.

Maschmann was taken into custody at the Keokuk County Jail and later released on a promise to appear for a pretrial conference scheduled for April 3rd. He is charged with violation of a no-contact/protective order, a simple misdemeanor.
