Jewell Phyllis Richards Mitchell, age 103, passed away on March 20th, 2026.
Jewell was born November 25, 1922, to Benjamin and Pansy Richards in Ottumwa, Iowa. She was married to Roy E. Mitchell on September 16, 1940. Five children were born to this union. Jewell was a homemaker and worked various jobs after her children were grown. She loved to sew, crochet, and make craft items that she shared with her family and friends. Most of all, she loved her family and was always welcoming new babies lovingly.
Jewell is survived by her son, Raymond Mitchell of Oskaloosa, Iowa; two daughters, Patricia (Carl) Gragg of Tiffin, Iowa, and LuAnn (Dennis) Pedrick of Urbandale, Iowa. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Christy (Doug) Lovstuen; Lori Gragg; David (Sheryl) Mitchell; Daniel Mitchell; and Denice Johnson. Her great-grandchildren include Robbie (Jade) Lovstuen; Tony Lovstuen; Jessica (Shawn) Ryan; Nikolas (Alexis) Pettyjohn; Hayle Pettyjohn; Daniel Mitchell; Jessica Fields; and Tanner Wright. Her great-great grandchildren include Alexis, Brooklyn and Eleanor Lovstuen; Odin and Annabelle Lovstuen; Ericka, Liam, Levi and Elayna Ryan; Adalyn, Brodi and Cyrus Pettyjohn; Brooklyn Mitchell; Gabriel Jameson; and Paisley Fields. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Roy E. Mitchell; two sons, Merrill Mitchell and his wife Betty, and Benny Mitchell; brothers Ray, John, Thomas, and Robert Richards; sisters Thelma Shaver, Kathryn Russell, and Beverly Howe; along with many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia with visitation from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., with a funeral service held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 28, 2026. Interment will follow services in Ottumwa Cemetery.
