Friends of Ottumwa’s Parks has secured a $50,000 grant from the Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation toward the construction of new outdoor public pickleball courts at Troeger Park, marking a significant milestone in the effort to bring a tournament-ready facility to the
community.

The project goal is $205,000. With the Legacy Foundation award, a $10,000 private pledge, a $13,500 pledge from the project’s construction partners, and $20,000 committed from Friends of Ottumwa’s Parks, approximately $94,000 has now been raised. Roughly $111,000 remains to fully fund the project.

Demolition of the existing court surface, in coordination with the City of Ottumwa, is anticipated in spring 2026, with construction and fencing to follow shortly thereafter. The courts will be public, seasonal, and open to residents and visitors alike.

The Troeger Park location is well positioned. Situated near Ottumwa’s city center and directly across from a new hotel, restaurant, and the city’s premier event venue, the facility is expected to draw regional league play and small tournaments, creating steady foot traffic and new energy in the area.

Connected to existing trails and public amenities, the courts will serve both daily recreational use and organized competitive play.

”The parks foundation is passionate about parks improvement” said Kim Hellige, Board Member of Friends of Ottumwa’s Parks ”This project not only meets a local need but will enhance the aging amenities of this centrally-located park”

Friends of Ottumwa’s Parks is continuing to raise funds from local businesses, pickleball players, traveling enthusiasts, and individual donors who want to help complete the facility. Community support in the coming months will determine how quickly construction can move forward in spring 2026.
