The Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce will host a Legislative Forum to provide residents with an opportunity to engage directly with elected officials and learn more about current legislative priorities impacting the local community.

The forum will take place on Saturday, March 21, at the Fairfield Public Library. Doors will open at 7:00 a.m., with the program running from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

State legislators Senator Adrian Dickey and Representatives Helena Hayes and Jeff Shipley will provide updates from the Iowa Capitol and discuss issues currently under consideration. As this forum takes place early in the legislative session, the discussion will focus on emerging priorities, with taxes and education identified as the primary topics for each session.

“The Legislative Forum is an important part of the Chamber’s mission to encourage civic involvement and informed dialogue,” said Mendy McAdams, Executive Director of the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce. “It offers our community a respectful space to hear directly from lawmakers and better understand the policies and decisions shaping our future.”

The Chamber reminds attendees that political discussions can be passionate and encourages all participants to remain courteous and respectful. To help ensure thoughtful and informed responses, the Chamber highly recommends that questions be submitted in advance by Friday, March 20 at 3:00 p.m.

Submitting questions early allows legislators time to research the topic and be prepared to provide accurate and meaningful answers.

All questions for the forum will be submitted in writing and read by the moderator. This process helps remove emotion from the delivery of questions and ensures the discussion remains focused and productive. Questions submitted in advance may be emailed to Chamber@FairfieldIowa.com or delivered to the Chamber office.

Attendees who prefer to submit a question on the morning of the event will also have that opportunity. Paper and writing utensils will be provided at the forum for participants to write and submit their questions. All questions will be read by the moderator during the Q&A portion of the program.

Questions should be topic-specific and relevant to issues legislators are actively working on. In an effort to accommodate as many questions as possible, participants are respectfully asked to state their questions concisely and reserve personal stories or extended commentary. Follow-up questions will not be permitted unless the participant returns to the end of the line and submits a new written question.

The Legislative Forum is intended to be an informational event and is not a debate.

Topics will be posted closer to the date on the Chamber’s social media, webpage and in the e-blast reminder that will be sent a couple days before the event. If you are not on our e-newsletter list, please visit www.FairfieldIowa.com and scroll down halfway. Click on subscribe to the e-newsletter and never miss another event or important announcement.

The Chamber extends its sincere appreciation to this year’s sponsors—Freeman Kevenides Law Firm, Morrissey Law Offices, Sierra Club, and Jefferson County Farmers and Neighbors—whose support ensures the forum remains free and accessible to the public. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for organizations interested in supporting civic engagement in the community.
