Update: On ongoing court case
During a law enforcement traffic stop in Mount Pleasant, officers discovered a stolen firearm and evidence of stolen property inside a vehicle.
On January 12th at approximately 5:11 a.m., the Mount Pleasant Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 200 block of South Main Street. The vehicle involved was impounded for further investigation after officers discovered fraudulent license plates and a lack of insurance.
The driver, Shawn Dix, 52, of the 3000 block of Rock Spring Road, and the passenger, Bradley Bohnenkamp, 39, of the 400 block of North Washington Street, were both taken into custody.
Court documents state that Dix was arrested for driving with a suspended license, operating a vehicle without insurance, using fraudulent registration, and operating an unregistered vehicle.
During a full inventory of the vehicle, officers discovered a Remington .870 Express Magnum 20-gauge shotgun on the floorboard behind the driver’s seat. According to a criminal complaint filed on January 13th, the firearm had been reported stolen in Des Moines County and was linked to an ongoing burglary investigation.
Officials reported that Dix admitted Bohnenkamp had acted as a co-defendant in transporting several stolen items, including the shotgun. Both Dix and Bohnenkamp have multiple prior felony convictions in Iowa, and Bohnenkamp also has prior convictions in Illinois.
A warrant for the arrest of both individuals had been issued on January 11th. Bohnenkamp is being held at the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility on a $5,000 cash/surety bond. Dix is held at the same facility on a $5,000 cash-only bond.
Arraignments for both defendants are scheduled for March 9th.
Charges:
- Bradley Bohnenkamp: Trafficking in stolen weapons, first offense, Class D felony.
- Shawn Dix: Trafficking in stolen weapons, first offense, Class D felony, and driving while license denied, suspended, canceled, or revoked (non-scheduled violation).
