While visiting the American Gothic House Center (AGHC) in Eldon, just a stone’s throw from the house that inspired Grant Wood’s famous painting, Third District Congressman Zach Nunn touted the landmark as a “mandatory stop” for anyone traveling through the state of Iowa.
Now the iconic destination will be receiving an addition to its tourist center thanks to a $412,000 investment, Nunn announced on Friday. During a press conference with stakeholders, Nunn talked about advocating for Eldon in front of the House Appropriations Committtee in Washington D.C.
“It’s very easy if you’re in New York or Chicago or the Twin Cities to say how this is going to impact,” Nunn said. “It’s much different to go in front of them and say, ‘In a community of under 500 people, here’s why we’re asking for this investment, but here’s what it’s going to do for the entire area.’ because rural America should not be left behind in these conversations.”
Nunn told stakeholders he had to advocate for the investment by competing with hundreds of thousands of other communities.
The AGHC will be adding an educational learning center that will be able to host 100 learners of all ages. AGHC administrator Cari Nicely outlined her vision for the updated facility.
“The intent is to have a building where people can sit. We can have personalized programs for those tour groups,” Nicely offered. “But most importantly, I think it’s an important place for the community to come together and feel safe.”
Nunn added that the educational learning center will not only be utilized by AGHC but also the city of Eldon, Wapello County, and the state of Iowa as a resource learning opportunity.
Nicely said she would like to have the new addition up and running by the 2027 tourist season.
