A field agronomist with Iowa State University Extension says it isn’t too early to start thinking about weed management for the upcoming growing season.
Meaghan Anderson says growers learned some lessons in 2025.
“We continued to get those rainfalls and continued to have so many opportunities for waterhemp and grasses to germinate through the summer,” she said. “I think that’s a learning point for some people that there are going to be growing seasons where those post-residuals are going to be really helpful to us.”
She tells Brownfield residuals are very useful tools.
“Using residual up front is going to be our first line of defense against our weed issues. Even in the times were we have these tighter margins and lower commodity prices, it’s not a good prospect to try and rely heavily on just post-only applications.”
Anderson says robust management of weed and pest pressures can set farmers up for better yields at harvest.
