Rick Peters, 70, of Oskaloosa, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Mahaska Health Hospice Serenity House.

James Ricky Peters, son of James W. and Margaret A. (Wion) Peters, was born April 11, 1955, in Leon, Iowa. While Rick was still a baby, the family moved to Corydon and later to Oskaloosa, Iowa. Rick attended Oskaloosa school. As a youngster, he played Little League baseball and later played football for all four years in high school. In football, his teammates and friends noticed he was pretty quick and bestowed on him the nickname “Rabbit,” a name a few of his friends and brothers still called him today. While in school, Rick worked part-time at the local Holiday station, maintained paper routes, shoveled snow, and mowed lawns. Rick graduated from Oskaloosa High School and began working for Matthew Lumber Company. He had a multitude of jobs, including working at Clow and Lynn’s Poultry, and he also painted.

Rick was a sports nut. He loved all things Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and New York Yankees. Beyond just watching his teams, he also collected many pieces of sports memorabilia from them. Playing softball was also a big part of Rick’s life. He enjoyed the game and the camaraderie.

In his free time, Rick would enjoy watching old westerns, WWE, and later in life, Dateline and Inside Edition. Rick loved his family immensely and enjoyed spending time with them.

Ricks’ family includes his mother, Margaret Peters, his brothers Mike Peters and Doug (Pam) Peters, both of Oskaloosa, his nieces and nephews, Carissa (Kyle) Heine, Sarah (Mike) Humpal, Brock Holcomb Peters, Kane Peters, and Emily (Brent Parker) Peters, and four great-nephews.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, a brother, Randy Peters, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Memorial services for Rick will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Bill Tvedt of Jubilee Family Church officiating. Private family interment of Rick’s ashes will take place at Forest Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to Margaret Peters and will be used as determined at a later time.
