- The lyrics to “Iowa Fight Song” are: “The word is ‘Fight! Fight! Fight! for Iowa,’ … Let every loyal Iowan sing … The word is ‘Fight! Fight! Fight! for Iowa’ … Until the walls and rafters ring (Go Hawks!) … Come on and cheer, cheer, cheer for Iowa … Come on and cheer until you hear the final gun … The word is ‘Fight! Fight! Fight! for Iowa … Until the game is won.”
- Written and composed by Iowa native Meredith Willson, “Iowa Fight Song” debuted on a Willson’s NBC radio show, “The Big Show,” on New Year’s Eve in 1950. Created to give the University of Iowa a more rousing fight song to rival other institutions, it became an instant hit and was introduced at a basketball game in early 1951, becoming a staple for the Hawkeye Marching Band. It’s based on the chord progression of Willson’s popular song, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” Willson was also creator of “The Music Man” in 1950.
- “We’re excited to unveil this bobblehead celebrating the ‘Iowa Fight Song,’ Iowa’s school song,” National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. “This bobblehead is sure to be popular among Iowa Hawkeyes fans who want to hear the school song at the push of a button!”
