The Fairfield bowling teams hosted Davis County on Thursday afternoon, January 15th, with the boys earning a victory while the girls fell to the undefeated Mustangs.
Boys Bowling: Fairfield 2526, Davis County 2387
The Fairfield boys delivered an impressive performance, defeating Davis County 2526-2387 to improve to 4-3 on the season. The Mustangs slipped to 6-4 with the loss.
Individual Performances
Henry Swan led all Trojan bowlers with a 395 series, rolling games of 196 and 199—well above his 160 average. Blake Ballew wasn’t far behind with a 371 series (195, 176), also exceeding his 159 average.
Dayson Workman posted a strong 350 series (180, 170), bowling above his 153 average. Corbin Starr added a 337 series (169, 168), surpassing his 150 average.
Aaron Carlson contributed a 301 series (170, 131), and Eli Aplara rounded out the scoring with a 300 series (165, 135), which was dropped as the low series.
The Trojans’ round one team total of 1,754 provided a solid foundation. In the Baker round, Fairfield posted games of 151, 206, 129, 138, and 148 for a total of 772, giving them a combined match total of 2,526.
Davis County finished with a round one total of 1,626 and a Baker round of 761 for a match total of 2,387.
Junior Varsity Results
Fairfield also fielded two junior varsity teams. Jacob Ryan led the JV bowlers with a 357 series (166, 191). Maxxon Zaragoza posted a 296 series (157, 139), Kris Powell rolled a 290 series (127, 163), Lucas Burgmeier added a 283 series (146, 137), and Mason Crew contributed a 252 series (138, 114). Both teams came out on top 2221-1779 and 1624-1463.
Girls Bowling: Davis County 2319, Fairfield 2024
The Fairfield girls battled against undefeated Davis County but came up short, falling 2319-2024. The Mustangs improved to a perfect 10-0, while the Trojans dropped to 2-5.
Individual Performances
Emma Cass paced Fairfield with a 334 series, highlighted by an outstanding first game of 221—well above her 158 average. She followed with a 113 in the second game.
Emma Forrest posted a solid 286 series (137, 149), bowling above her 131 average. Autumn Rose McBride added a 263 series (153, 110).
Savannah Garretson contributed a 241 series (114, 127), exceeding her 89 average. Braezyn Stutzman rolled a 208 series (98, 110), and Brooklyn Gridley finished with a 192 series (92, 100), which was dropped as the low series.
The Trojans’ round one team total of 1,332 left them trailing. In the Baker round, Fairfield posted games of 156, 117, 126, 137, and 156 for a total of 692, giving them a combined match total of 2,024.
Davis County dominated with a round one total of 1,626 and a Baker round of 693 for a match total of 2,319.
Coach’s Perspective
Head coach Melinda Chatfield praised both teams’ performances and attitudes.
On the boys team’s depth and chemistry:
“As far as the boys go, we have such a great team and they all get along so well. They are bowling over their practice averages, working on making their spares.”
Assistant coach Mark Swan added his perspective on the team’s versatility:
“I just love our team. I’ve got six guys that I feel like I could roll out a hundred different ways and compete. The toughest decisions we have are who gets the sixth spot on varsity and who sits each Baker game. I’ve got three guys I can anchor, five guys who can lead off, and mix and match everyone in-between.”
On the girls team’s progress:
“As far as the girls, they are a lot of fun. They are also bowling over their practice averages at meets and working hard to make their spares. We just need to stay positive and go out and do the best we can each meet.”
Looking Ahead
Both Fairfield teams will be back in action on Saturday, January 17th at Champion Bowl in Ottumwa. They will face multiple opponents including Muscatine, Davis County, Clarke, Keokuk, Louisa-Muscatine, Ottumwa, Sigourney-Keota, Marshalltown, and Southeast Polk in what promises to be a busy day of competition.
The boys will look to build on their momentum after defeating Davis County, while the girls will aim to bounce back against a tough field of competitors.
