The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a weather briefing highlighting hazardous conditions expected across Iowa on Thursday.
Strong winds will be the primary concern, with gusts ranging from 40 to 50 miles per hour across much of the state. These winds, combined with rapidly falling temperatures, may lead to refreezing on roadways, creating slick travel conditions—especially where moisture remains from earlier precipitation.
In addition, brief snow bursts or snow squalls are possible, with the highest potential across northern Iowa. These fast-moving snow bands can cause sudden reductions in visibility and quick accumulations, making travel dangerous with little warning.
A Wind Advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. through midnight Thursday. Drivers are urged to use caution, particularly during the late morning through evening hours when conditions may deteriorate quickly.
