Wapello County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Highway 34 near the Wapello–Jefferson County line after receiving a report of a dog that had been hit by a vehicle.

Upon arrival, deputies found a black-and-white dog severely injured. Emergency care was provided at the scene before the dog was transported to Eastview Animal Hospital in Ottumwa, where veterinarians report the animal is in critical condition.

Officials say the dog did not have identification tags and was not microchipped. A second dog—a reddish-brown husky—was seen running with the injured animal. The husky, believed to have been attached to a broken chain, could not be captured and is still loose in the area.

Authorities are asking anyone who recognizes either dog or has information about their owner to contact Eastview Animal Hospital immediately at 641-682-0533. This is considered an emergency situation.
