Fremont County authorities are still searching for answers nearly 60 years after an unidentified man’s body was pulled from the Missouri River.

On May 26, 1966, a white male was discovered near mile marker 662.62 along Rural Route B in Fremont County. Investigators said the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition, making identification difficult. Despite efforts over the years, the man’s name and the circumstances surrounding his death remain unknown.

When the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) formed its Cold Case Unit in 2009, this case was among roughly 150 unsolved investigations added to their list of cases they hoped to solve through modern DNA and forensic technology.

Although the Cold Case Unit’s federal funding ended in 2011, DCI agents have continued to reexamine older cases as new leads or scientific advancements arise. The agency remains committed to identifying the man and uncovering what happened to him.
