What began in the mid-1960s as a simple neighbor-helping-neighbor effort has grown into one of Ottumwa’s most enduring holiday traditions. In its earliest years, the Izaak Walton League’s turkey roast was a small, informal project—local volunteers gathering to prepare turkeys and distribute meals to families who might otherwise struggle during the holidays.

Back then, the effort was modest: donated birds, borrowed roasters, and a handful of organizers hoping to make Thanksgiving a little brighter for others. But the need, and the community’s enthusiasm, quickly turned the annual roast into something larger.

By the 1970s and 1980s, the roast had become a fixture of Ottumwa’s holiday season. Volunteers from all walks of life—business owners, students, retirees, civic club members—came together each year to help prepare hundreds of meals. Local organizations often pitched in with donations, supplies, and manpower, making the event one of the area’s most cooperative community efforts.

As the tradition grew, so did its purpose. The roast evolved into a major fundraiser for the Izaak Walton League’s conservation and youth-education programs, helping support everything from environmental stewardship to outdoor skills training. At the same time, the event continued to fulfill its original mission: ensuring families across the region could sit down to a hot Thanksgiving meal.

For many Ottumwa residents, the turkey roast is tied to personal memories—packing meals with parents, volunteering in high school, or picking up a meal for an elderly neighbor. The tradition has become part of the rhythm of the season, signaling not just the approach of Thanksgiving, but a celebration of service, generosity, and community unity.

Today, the roast stands as a blend of past and present: honoring its humble beginnings while continuing to support local families and the League’s mission. Decades after it first started, the Izaak Walton League turkey roast remains a reminder of what a small act of kindness can grow into when a community stands behind it.
