Shop with a Cop: Building Trust and Joy in Wapello County

Shop with a Cop is more than just a holiday event—it’s an opportunity to build lasting trust between law enforcement and children. Each December, local deputies and officers spend one-on-one time with children facing hardships, providing positive experiences with role models they can look up to and turn to in times of need.

Referrals for the Shop with a Cop program come from local schools, community members, and various agencies. The program helps build trust, self-worth, and meaningful connections. It shows children that law enforcement is there to help, to listen, and to care. For many participants, it’s the first time they’ve had a reason to truly smile.

In 2024, Shop with a Cop helped 149 children from approximately 30 families in Wapello County. Officers volunteer their time during the first weekends in December to take children shopping, followed by a fun-filled lunch at a local restaurant. The joy of seeing a toy aisle full of giggling kids choosing the perfect gift for someone special, and watching officers kneel to make eye contact and connect with each child—it’s priceless.

Businesses and individuals are invited to join this mission. Sponsorships and donations of any amount are welcome, with every dollar going directly toward serving children facing hardships. Any unused funds support related charitable efforts, including the continuation of the Wapello County Sheriff’s Reserves Program and essential administrative costs for operating Shop with a Cop.
