The Pella Marching Dutch have capped an exceptional 2025 season with news that will take them to the nation’s capital: an invitation to perform in the 250th Fourth of July Parade in Washington, D.C., next summer.

The 226-member ensemble compiled an impressive list of accomplishments throughout the fall, competing successfully across multiple prestigious competitions while maintaining the program’s decades-long tradition of excellence.

Band of America Regional Competition

The Marching Dutch delivered their strongest performance at the Band of America Regional Competition, where they claimed first place in Class 2A and earned the Outstanding General Effect award.

The group advanced to the Open Class Finals, an achievement shared by only two Iowa bands at the event. Competing against 29 bands from seven states, Pella placed 10th overall despite being the second smallest school among the finalists.

Valleyfest Dominance

At Valleyfest, the Marching Dutch swept the awards in Class 4A, capturing first place overall while also earning recognition for Outstanding Hornline, Color Guard, Percussion, and Marching.

State Contest Streak Continues

The program extended its remarkable streak at the Iowa High School Music Association State Contest, earning a Division 1 rating for the 51st consecutive year—a historic achievement demonstrating sustained excellence across more than five decades.

Mid Iowa Band Championship

The Marching Dutch claimed first place in Class 4A at the Mid Iowa Band Championship while also receiving awards for Best Percussion and Best Color Guard, further highlighting the ensemble’s well-rounded excellence.

Historic Class Competition

Band Director Dameon Place expressed pride in the group’s achievements, particularly their success competing in Iowa’s largest classification for the first time.

“The Marching Dutch were 226 strong this fall and continued the storied history of excellence in marching band,” Place said. “They were especially thrilled to have such competitive success in the largest class size in Iowa for the first time ever!”

Washington, D.C., Awaits

The invitation to perform in the 250th Fourth of July Parade in Washington, D.C., represents a culminating honor for the program and its members. The historic parade will celebrate America’s 250th Independence Day, providing a national stage for the Marching Dutch to showcase their talents.
