The city of Bloomfield named a 20-year-old firefighter to be the new Fire Chief of the Bloomfield Fire Department during its city council meeting last week.

Daniel Oliver, who served two years in the Ottumwa Fire Department, was tabbed to lead the Bloomfield Fire Department based on a 4-1 vote from the city council. Don Walton was the only no vote.

Members of the Bloomfield Fire Department attended the meeting but threw their support behind Interim Fire Chief Brian Thomas, who led the department since the departure of former Fire Chief Jeff McClure, who retired in July 2025. Thomas has served as a firefighter for 12 years.

Oliver will remain employed the Ottumwa Fire Department while also serving as the new Fire Chief of the Bloomfield Fire Department.
