On Thursday morning, a 41-year-old woman from Kalona, Jessica Beraza, was arrested due to a warrant issued in Texas for smuggling charges. The arrest occurred around 8:41 a.m. when deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at 500 block C Avenue regarding an unlocked situation.
Upon their arrival, deputies apprehended Beraza, who faces two counts of smuggling persons. After her arrest, she appeared in Washington County Court and chose to waive her right to extradition, indicating her willingness to return to Texas voluntarily. A hearing to formalize this waiver is scheduled for November 14.
As of now, Beraza is being held at the Washington County Jail without bond.
